The headquarters and seat of Greubel Forsey in La Chaux-de-Fonds is one of the most fascinating buildings in the entire Swiss watch industry. The centerpiece of the facility is a 17th-century farmhouse, purchased in 2007 by company founders Robert Greubel and Stephen Forsey. Throughout the late 2000s and early 2010s, the duo worked gradually to expand the building into its current form, which features a tall modernist glass-walled studio swelling from the side of the once quaint log home.

Before I get into more about Franck Muller's latest creation, I must state that I am biased towards this product, as the Long Island was one of my first real encounters with fine watchmaking. It remains one of my favorite watch designs, especially when paired with Franck Muller's Crazy Hours complication.
Indeed, Franck Muller has an excellent track record with pure chronograph or chronograph and date watches, whether it's the Casablanca or Long Island or its iconic Cintrée Curvex. Adding a tourbillon or multi-axis tourbillon certainly elevates an elegant three-hand watch as well. Jumping display Perhaps for this reason, in order to revitalize Long Island in 2024, the watchmaker has launched three different pure time or time and date references, which display very different times. The most important of these is the Master Jumper, a new triple jump complication that is exemplary (and a record in watchmaking). While triple jumpers do exist in perpetual calendars, these are pure calendar instantaneous triple jumpers, whose jumps coincide only once a month.
In terms of jumping hour displays on chronographs, the Zeitwerk Date is closest to the Franck Muller Master Jumper, but the latter is better in one respect: the Zeitwerk Date is a large date display, which means there are two date discs. Overall, the Master Jumper uses five discs to display the hours (one disc), minutes (two discs), and date. This does make it an impressive movement, because the energy required to repeatedly drive five discs (or even four or three discs) is very large, and it also causes the amplitude to drop every time it happens. Franck Muller has overcome this problem using an unusual dual barrel system, with one barrel powering the date display and the gear train, and the other barrel driving only the time display. By separating the two sources (like a carrousel), it reduces the impact on accuracy. Sadly, this also comes with another cost – power reserve. The Calibre FM 3100 has a 30-hour autonomy, which is more than enough if you wear this watch every day, but winding the watch every day would be a difficult task.
The New Long Island For about five years (or more), I have been asking Franck Muller high quality cheap watches whether or not to update the Long Island case. Not that the original Long Island looks dated, but it was certainly a step behind in terms of construction, materials, and development. The new Long Island Evolution (Franck Muller does like Evolution) has certainly changed all that. With a black PVD-coated brushed titanium case with an aluminum inner case, the watch is lightweight and very modern. If you take into account the bright green anodizing of the inner case, it looks almost like a TRON.
This additional structure is designed to enhance the watch's shock resistance and complements the skeletonized display. Transparency, sportiness and style are the highlights of this collection, which is almost the opposite of Long Island's Novocento origins, which were inspired by Art Deco and romantic in style. There are two other watches in the collection, one is the Giga Tourbillon and the other is a time-only watch with a seven-day power reserve.
